These are my donut drops — little golden dough balls fried up crispy that taste just like funnel cake. Fair warning: they're sweet, they're addictive, and they disappear fast. Have you made these before?
Ingredients
- About 2 cups vegetable oil, for frying
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ⅓ cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- Pinch of salt
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions
- Heat the oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the egg, milk, and 2 tablespoons of oil. Stir until a soft dough comes together — if it's too wet, work in a little more flour.
- You're looking for a dough thick enough to scoop up with a spoon and hold its shape.
- Scoop up a small piece, roll it back and forth between two spoons to round it off, and drop it into the hot oil.
- Fry until deep golden brown on one side, then flip with a fork and brown the other side.
- Drain and serve warm. Try them with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar on top!
Tips
- Don't crowd the pan. They need room to float around and brown evenly.
- Too runny to scoop? Add flour a spoonful at a time. Too stiff? A splash more milk.
- They're not bannock! These are much sweeter — think funnel cake, not bread.
